The Bela-Bela Local Municipality has withdrawn a case of trespassing against Sello Moswoeu of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).
The case was a sequel to a land grab programme on the Alma Road by members of the EFF.
The municipality had at the time opened a case of trespassing against Moswoeu, the EFF’s Bela-Bela co-ordinator.
The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court removed the case from the roll on Tuesday 24 April.
Municipal spokesperson Kabelo Mosito confirmed the decision to withdraw the charges.
He said the decision followed a mediation process between the two parties.
Mosito said Moswoeu had made a written undertaking to stop the illegal occupation of land.
Moswoeu extended his gratitude towards the municipality for the decision to withdraw the charges.
“To my surprise when I attended court, I was informed the case had been withdrawn by the municipality,” he said.
He told The BEAT he still believed the homeless had the right to take occupation of unused land.
His’s first court appearance was on Friday 1 December last year.
